Illustrations
Frequently, an author will include illustrations with a manuscript submission. Imbued with enthusiasm and passion for their own project, they often include a suggested cover as well as back cover illustrations for the soon-to-be book. Unfortunately, traditional publishers do not welcome illustrations of any kind. They have their own artists on retainer, many of whom have been with the publishing company for a long time.
The other issue is that in many instances, the images submitted by the author have no legal basis. They have been taken from stock images without permission or worse yet, they have been “done by a friend.” In such an instance, legal documentation will have to be provided to the potential publisher. The raw truth is, just don’t submit the images.
The exception to this is if you are submitting a manuscript and you have a high profile as an artist. Perhaps you are represented in a major gallery and your work has been converted into prints, greeting cards and gyclees. In such an instance, the traditional publisher will review your work and perhaps offer a contract for both the printed form as well as a separate contract for the illustrations.
In many instances, particularly self-published children’s books, illustrations are integral to the success of a book. Our office represents professional artists and illustrators who can be sub-contracted to work with you on your manuscript. Detailed information about our artists can be obtained by contacting us.
